About

The idea about this international workshop came when two PhD students, both working on theses that regard Alcuin of York, met in June 2017 at a conference in Fribourg, Switzerland, and soon became friends. The PhD students are Rebecca Schmalholz and Isabela Stoian.

Rebecca Schmalholz comes from Germany. She has a Masters Degree in Classical Philology and History. She is currently working on a PhD-project supervised by Prof. Dr. Sebastian Scholz, Universität Zürich. Research topics are poetry of the Carolingian Renaissance, networks of scholars and a cultural history of Literature and Education. (See more about Rebecca here:

Isabela Stoian comes from Romania. She has a BA in Classical Philology and MAs in Medieval Studies, Translation Studies and Biblical Exegesis. She is currently working on a PhD thesis under the supervision of Prof. Karin Schlapbach (University of Fribourg) and Prof. Florica Bechet (University of Bucharest). She is preparing a modern critical edition of Alcuin's Ars grammatica. Her main interests are Latin paleography, Carolingian education and grammar.
